Home Energy Evaluation
We start with a comprehensive on-site Home Energy Evaluation to diagnose the causes of high utility bills, energy loss, health problems and discomfort. Our certified technicians use specialized equipment to thoroughly test and measure the appliances, energy using systems and construction of your home. We enter this information into our proprietary software tool that employs the principles of building science, modeling the dynamics of air flow and moisture, and how household equipment interacts with each other as a whole.
After fully evaluating your home, we provide a detailed report that highlights the most effective home improvement options, including costs and predicted energy savings. We will help you prioritize what changes will save the most energy and have the greatest reduction on your utility bills.
Efficiency Remodeling and Construction Services
SolarCity can help you implement the most effective upgrades identified during your Home Energy Evaluation. Some of our most common projects include:
Air Sealing - Most homes have small cracks and holes where the air you paid to heat or cool leaks outside. A blower door test will reveal where your home is losing air and pinpoint opportunities where your home could retain more energy. SolarCity thoroughly seals your building envelope to keep conditioned air in and dust, mold and allergens out.
Insulation - Proper insulation allows your home to retain heat and maintain temperature. Heat flows naturally from a warmer to a cooler space. So in the winter, heat moves from your warm interior rooms into the attic, basement and outdoors. We will recommend what kind and quantity of insulation you need for your family’s comfort and for energy efficiency.
Duct Sealing and Repair - Duct leakage can cause severe indoor air quality problems and increases energy use. The average duct system leaks 30% or more of conditioned air! If your furnace is frequently turning on and off, or if you have some rooms that are too hot or cold—these are signs that your ducts may be leaking or are poorly designed. Sealing ducts can help improve indoor air quality by reducing the risk of pollutants entering ducts and circulating through your home.
Heating and Cooling - Heating and cooling equipment uses more energy and money than any other system in your home. A properly sized, installed and maintained system can save you money and easily maintain a comfortable temperature. Oversized systems cycle on and off in short run times, never operating at their steady state efficiency.
Water Heating - You can greatly reduce your monthly water heating bills by selecting the appropriate water heater for your home. Installing a new, high efficient water heater is one way to save energy and money. Recirculation systems, solar thermal, insulated pipes, and tankless water heaters can also improve efficiency and deliver hot water to you at a much faster rate.
Pool Pumps - Replacing your old pool pump with a high efficiency, variable speed model can dramatically reduce your electric load.
Verification and Ongoing Monitoring
After we finish installing the upgrades to your home, we will test to ensure that the retrofits address the issues we identified during your Home Energy Evaluation. You may also opt to install a PowerGuide energy monitoring system to manage your energy consumption and further improve your home’s efficiency.
Rebates and Financing for Green Energy Projects
Federal, state and utility rebates and tax credits are available for many of the efficiency upgrades we offer. In addition, several cities are beginning to offer Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) programs that allow homeowners to finance energy efficiency projects through their property taxes. SolarCity will help you to identify all of the qualifying incentives and programs for your project.
