Livermore Mayor Marshall Kamena will join Our Savior Lutheran Ministries and SolarCity on Wednesday in a ceremony to celebrate the church’s commitment to using clean, renewable power with a new, 200-kilowatt solar power installation. The solar power system consists of multiple arrays on Our Savior Lutheran Ministries’ buildings. SolarCity estimates the solar power system will produce more than 240,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity this year, sufficient to provide approximately two-thirds of the church’s energy needs.

SolarCity financed the solar power system via a power purchase agreement (PPA); an arrangement in which SolarCity installs the solar panels for free and Our Savior Lutheran pays for the solar electricity the system produces. The solar electricity is expected to reduce the church’s annual electric bills by approximately $56,000, while costing $49,000, creating a net savings of approximately $7,000 per year that can be used for other expenses, or to support other ministries.

The church’s solar system is expected to offset close to 9 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions over its lifetime, the equivalent of taking 1,000 cars off the road for a year or planting nearly 5,000 trees. Representatives from Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) also will be on hand to discuss the advantages of going solar.
