SolarCity and Brookfield Homes Hawai‘i Offer Solar Power for New Homes with No Upfront Cost, Immediate Savings for Homeowners
MILILANI, Hawaii, January 28, 2014 — SolarCity (Nasdaq: SCTY) and Brookfield Homes Hawai‘i are offering solar on existing as well as selected new homes in the Brookfield Homes Hawai‘i KaMilo community within the Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. SolarCity, with local operations in Mililani, makes it possible for new Brookfield homeowners to install solar panels for little to no money upfront, and reduce their electric utility bills significantly by using solar electricity.
KaMilo, a luxury community comprised of 137 single-family and paired-family homes on the Kohala Coast, is the first neighborhood in Hawai‘i to provide solar panels as an included feature on selected housing designs with no upfront cost. As of this month, Brookfield Homes Hawai‘i buyers can immediately reap the benefits of solar power upon purchase of their homes and may save more than $1,500 on their annual electricity costs with SolarCity.
“Through our partnership with SolarCity, we can now offer new homeowners this premier opportunity of sustainable, luxurious living in Hawai‘i,” said Jeffrey Prostor, president of Brookfield Homes Hawai‘i. “Providing energy-saving standard features on our homes located along one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world is a value that we are excited to pass on to our home buyers.”
Under the new clean energy plan, new homeowners in the KaMilo community may pay up to 50 percent less for solar electricity than they pay for traditional utility power. SolarCity will install and maintain the systems throughout the 20-year life of the contract.
“Averaging up to 350 sunny days a year, solar power makes sense on the Kohala Coast” said Jon Yoshimura, director of policy and electricity markets at SolarCity. “We expect KaMilo to become a model for new home developments in Hawai’i.”
