Veteran of SunPower and PowerLight brings more than 25 years of solar sales and leadership experience to the company’s expanding commercial business
Sep 20, 2011

SAN MATEO, Calif., Sept. 20, 2011—SolarCity®, a national leader in solar financing, design, installation, monitoring and energy efficiency services, today announced that Thomas Leyden has joined the company as vice president of commercial sales. Leyden has more than 25 years of experience in the renewable industry. Leyden will report to CEO Lyndon Rive, manage SolarCity’s commercial solar sales organization and pursue new opportunities for growth.
“Tom Leyden has helped some of America’s leading businesses go solar, and he will be a tremendous asset to SolarCity,” said Lyndon Rive, SolarCity’s CEO. “Few people realize that commercial solar represents more than half of SolarCity’s business. I expect Tom to significantly expand what we’ve already done.”
Leyden joins SolarCity from SunPower Corporation where he was managing director of East Coast operations. In his role, Leyden managed SunPower’s effort to gain more than 30 percent of the commercial solar market on the East Coast. During his tenure at SunPower, Leyden oversaw the installation of more than 130 commercial projects including some of the nation’s largest retail and Fortune 500 companies. Previously, Leyden was VP of East Coast operations for PowerLight Corporation, and VP of sales and marketing at WorldWater Corporation.
Leyden has also had several important industry roles. He was previously president of the Mid-Atlantic for Solar Energy Industries Association (MSEIA), chairman of PV Now (predecessor of Solar Alliance), and board member of national SEIA and advisor to the Interstate Renewable Energy Council. In these influential roles, Leyden helped drive state solar policy nationwide.
“SolarCity has already grown to be one of the market leaders with more than 500 commercial and government projects completed or underway,” said Leyden. “The company is continuously identifying new, innovative ways to make solar accessible for schools, the military, nonprofits and corporations. I look forward to helping continue to push the envelope and find new areas of opportunity.”
Leyden graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. He led the alumni Habitat for Humanity Project, and served on the Planning Board of Chesterfield Township, New Jersey, working to replace suburban sprawl with sustainable, environmentally sound development.
